Oceanside Parking Study: July Data Collection

DIXON recently completed the first round of parking data collection for the City of Oceanside across the downtown and coastal areas. Working with the City’s Public Works team, we collected data throughout the day on both a weekday and a Saturday to understand how parking demand changes by time, location, and day of the week.

We used a combination of mobile License Plate Recognition (LPR) and drone imagery to create a more complete picture of parking activity.

LPR allowed us to efficiently collect vehicle data throughout the study area. Our Rapid LPR Tool transformed the raw data into parking results, including occupancy, turnover, length of stay, repeat parking, and other trends. The tool builds on more than a decade of experience using LPR for parking studies.

We also processed drone imagery to identify vehicles and measure occupancy from the air. The imagery provided an important real-world view of parking conditions and helped capture areas where mobile LPR had limited visibility or access.

As always, privacy was at the core of our efforts. License plate numbers collected through LPR were anonymized, and no personal information was used in the analysis.

We look forward to returning to Oceanside for another round of data collection this fall and comparing parking conditions between seasons.
